Child Charity - How to Decide on One - By Jeremy P Stanfords

The decision to partner with a child charity should be made with careful consideration.

Though most children’s charity organizations operate on the basic premise of using monetary donations to improve a child’s life somewhere in the world, how this is accomplished varies widely.

Many factors must be considered when evaluating a charity to partner with.

The first is whether the donation will be a one-time gift or an ongoing monthly sponsorship. A one-time gift has the benefit of being easy for the giver because there is no long-term commitment, and little thought or effort is required. While one-time gifts are greatly appreciated by a child charity, a commitment to a monthly sponsorship (particularly when it’s focused on holistic child development) has greater potential to powerfully impact a child’s life.

Once the commitment to a monthly sponsorship is made, the next factor to consider is how the donation will be used to improve the child’s life. Many child charity organizations focus only on the child’s physical needs - nutrition and health. Services to provide these needs may be administered by a social agency or a school in the child’s community.

Often, the meal served at school will be the only one the child will eat that day. Medical care may be provided and may include treatment for illness, immunizations, and education in hygiene and disease preventionSome charity organizations help with the child’s education and vocational training.

This may involve providing school supplies and books, paying a teacher’s salary, or hiring classroom aides, as well as teaching the child culturally relevant life skills such as sewing or woodworking. These interventions give the child a head start toward becoming a self-sufficient adult.

Emphasis on spiritual development is one program component that sets a few organizations apart from the rest. A partnership between the child charity and the local church provides the child with an opportunity to learn about God in a culturally sensitive manner.

A unique aspect of monthly sponsorship is the opportunity to be a part of the sponsored child’s life. This is accomplished when the child and the sponsor can exchange letters and pictures. The children’s charity acts as the go-between, handling dictation for the youngest children and translation so each child and sponsor can read the other’s letters.

In some ways this may be the most essential part of monthly sponsorship - letting a child know he or she is important and cared for. Choosing the right child charity can be overwhelming, as there are many worthwhile organizations from which to choose. Carefully considering what is most important will make the decision process easier.

The opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life is a reward beyond measure.
